    Observation of Jupiter made with the high resolution ultraviolet spectrometer of the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory copernicus in April and May, 1980, yield a Jovian Lyman alpha emission intensity of 7 + or 2.5 RR. This indicates a decrease by about a factor of two since the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometer measurements, nearly a year earlier. An unusually high column abundance of hydrogen atoms above the methane homopause at the Voyager epoch is indicated. Since the auroral charged particle bombardment of molecular hydrogen is expected to contribute significantly to the global population of the hydrogen atoms, it is suggested that at the time of the Voyager Jupiter encounter unusually high auroral activity existed, perhaps d to the high concentration of the Io plasma torus. The temporal variation of the Saturn lyman alpha emission, when contrasted with the Jovian data, reveals that the auroral processes are not nearly as important in determining the Saturn Lyman alpha intensity in the nonauroral region

    Assessment of Alaska reindeer populations and range conditions

    Populations of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) have fluctated greatly since their introduction to Alaska in 1891. In the 1930s, reported numbers exceeded 600 000. Presently, 38 000 reindeer graze 6.2 million ha of rangeland and woodland in Western Alaska (from 66°54'N to 52°07'N latitude). Condition of winter range producing fruticose lichens (Cladina rangiferina, Cladina arbuscula, Cladina stellaris, Cetraria cucullata, Cetraria islandica) is of major concern. Monitoring programs have been established for vegetation, fire, reindeer and wildlife. Reindeer have overgrazed lichen resources on some Bering Sea Islands. Wildfires have had the greatest impact on lichen range depletion on the mainland. Overgrazing has been a problem in localized areas. Moose (Alces alces) and muskox (Ovibos moschatus) rarely contribute to major lichen depletion. 60-80% of the mainland and 5-30% of most island winter lichen ranges are presently estimated to be in good to excellent ecological condition. Procedures for assessing condition of the lichen ranges are being further refined

    We reanalyse the cell theory of Lennard-Jones and Devonshire and find that in addition to the critical point originally reported for the 12-6 potential (and widely quoted in standard textbooks), the model exhibits a further critical point. It also discusses works by physicists around the same time that were thematically related to the philosophical topics he was working on: Ludwig Boltzmann, Wilhelm Ostwald, Edgar Buckingham, James Thomson, D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, Henry Crew (and his new translation of Galileo's Two New Sciences during this period), Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, Van Der Waals, and Rayleigh (following up on the work of Gabriel Stokes), and Richard C Tolman. The landmark work at Britain's National Physical Laboratory in 1914 on Similar Motions by Stanton and Pannell, following up on Osborne Reynolds' work in Manchester, is also described and discussed. Connections between physics and the history of flight are mentioned, too: Penuad's successes, Boltzmann's relationship with engineer Otto Lilienthal, and the significance that Hermann von Helmholtz's landmark paper in meteorology which addressed the problem of steering aircraft, took on during this period
